Hello all five people that read my blog.
You guys are all uber awesome. :)
So, I don't really know if you know this, but I am writing a book. Actually I am writing two books.
It's no big deal really. Anyone who knows me knows I have always been an avid reader. Makes sense that I would eventually dip my toes into the writing pool. I just never knew how deep said pool really was.
Writing is the easy part.
Okay, I am totally lying there.
Writing is not so easy. Depends on the kind of writer you are. I am what people call a 'panster' writer. As opposed to a planning writer, I just sit down at the computer and write. No planning, just writing as it comes. I usually write in order. It's intuative almost.
I can only get so far before I have to take a step back and put on my planning hat though. Which is why I have a room with loads of post-its filled with storylines and character profiles and subplots. I am getting there folks.
So I am about 23,000 words in and I am aiming to finish by my birthday. I feel pressured to be done quicker because it seems all the others in my writing group are faster and have everything together. But my word of the year is consistent. I just need to get the story out. I just need to write. It's difficult to 'just write'. I want to research and make sure everything is correct. I am not writing paranormal or fantasy. I am writing a thriller.
I never would have thought that would be my genre because I love paranormal. But My story said "nope uh uh, you are not writing anything else but this." So I have to make sure the police procedure is correct and the homocidal maniacs' tendancies are consistent with being, well, homicidal. And the victims, geez, I have to make sure they are correctly victimized. Crap, I even have to make sure the timeline is consistent. Sounds easier than it is folks. It is easy to go off on a tangent and forget to steer the story back to on track.
You see what I mean about not 'just writing'. It takes way more than that to make it good enough to publish.
Which is what I plan on doing.
As I write, you can embark on this journey with me. I will go through my steps on this blog as I go. Won't that be fun. I know you are all very excited about it.
As you have read, this is step one. Write the story. So I am. But I have come to a bit of a block. You see, there is only so much you can just write. I have written my story, now I have to make sure the timeline is consistent which is proving harder than I though.
My story is set in high school. They say write what you know and since I went to three different high schools I think I can say that I know high school. Plus I am still a child at heart. So anyway, seniors in high school; The class schedule alone is giving me trouble. I have to make sure the interactions are happening in the right classes. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now I find I am having to go back and re-read to make sure. So confusing.
So I think I will start using scrivener again. I had it for a while and it was great. But I felt it was too much for what I needed. Now, I know exactly where I will put all my little character profiles and timeline legends.
I can't wait. Also, I need to actually type it all up. I have been handwriting everything but I need to get it all on the computer soon.
That is my goal this week. To get everything that I have handwritten on the computer. I will check in next week and let you know how that went.
For now I will leave you with this.
